Jeeten Marandi and others in Death Row are Targets of Indian State’s Conspiracy!
Immediately Withdraw the Death Sentence Pronounced against Adivasi and Dalit Cultural Activists Jeeten Marandi, Anil Ram, Manoj Rajwar and Chhatrapati Mandal!
27 June 2011–The Giridih Lower court has awarded death sentence to peoples’ cultural activists Jeeten Marandi, Manoj Rajwar, Chhatrapati Mandal and Anil Ram in connection with the Chilkhari killings. On 27 October, 2007, Anup Marandi, the son of Babulal Marandi, ex-chief minister of Jharkhand, was shot dead by the Maoists along with 19 members of the Nagarik Suraksha Samiti, a vigilante gang promoted and patronised by the ex-chief minister.
Jeeten was deliberately and falsely implicated in this case, because Jeeten as a cultural activist has been exposing and opposing the anti-people and repressive policies of the state, through his organisations Jharkhand Aven and Krantikari Janvadi Morcha. Through his songs, plays and articles he consistently opposed displacement, corporate loot and state repression.

In India, 11-Year Hunger Strike Over Military Violence Is Waged in Shadows
By LYDIA POLGREEN
IMPHAL, India — She arrived in an ambulance, thin and ghostly pale, a tube dangling from her nostril. Flanked by police officers, she was ushered into the judge’s chambers for a fortnightly ritual she has repeated hundreds of times. Was she ready to end her fast?
Irom Chanu Sharmila, a 39-year-old poet and activist, gave her usual reply: no. With that, she was taken back to the hospital room where she spends her days in isolation, force-fed a sludgy mix of nutrients though the tube in her nose. This routine has gone on, remarkably, for 11 years.

“Naxal” recalls three years of torture in jail

MUMBAI: Over three decades ago, as an engineering student at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Mumbai boy Prashant Rahi briefly met Dr Binayak Sen and was inspired by his work in impoverished villages. Little did Rahi imagine that in December 2007, seven months after Sen was arrested on grounds of sedition and accused of being a Maoist, he would face the same fate.
Rahi’s arrest took place around the same time Taare Zameen Par hit theatres in Mumbai, a film for which his daughter Shikha worked as an assistant director.

West Bengal, India: Maoists making gains, building hospitals

It seems that the CPI(Maoist) is strengthening its influence in West Bengal, and even the reactionary media is taking note.
The following report from The Hindustan Times gives the Maoists begrudging praise for their  work in the area –  for their health centers and infrastructure projects.
It should be noted that such initiatives are not a “change of face” for the Maoists, but consistent with their long-term strategy.
Thanks to Sidhartha S. for suggesting this piece.
The invisible Maoist hand back in Bengal
by Snigdhendu Bhattacharya
September 10, 2011–From symbolising terror and subjugation, Maoists are now aiming for a change of perception. Or so it seems, at least in their strongholds in Jangalmahal area of Bengal.
In Maoist-dominated areas of West Midnapore, at about 130-150 km from Kolkata, which Hindustan Times visited recently, rebels have not only recovered lost ground, but are also running health centres and schools, building embankments and, repairing roads and ponds.

Terrorism on American Soil: Mass Murder of Tulsa’s Black Community, 1921

Posted by Mike E on April 4, 2010

Dead during the Tulsa “race riot” of 1921
Blindspot #1: Over and over, for the last days, we have heard the media announce that 9/11 was the “first terrorist act on American soil.” It is a mind-boggling announcement — given that this whole country was founded on a series of terrorist acts that raked Africa and the Americas over centuries.
Blindspot #2:I watched Andrea Mitchell announced that 9/11 was “in so many ways our loss of innocence.”
Official America is constantly “losing its innocence” — meaning that it perceives itself as innocent, gullible and naive, surrounded by a world of cunning evil. And over and over it reestablishes itself as good and “innocent,” and (to its own cynical shock) over and over rediscovers the supposed evil in others.
Here is a story written in 2000. Please read it and consider the long history of terrorist acts “on American soil.” As someone wrote on this thread recently:
“This is my Memorial, right? Truth Be told 9/11 was never my Memorial.”

On May 30, 1921, a rumor swept through the booming western oil town of Tulsa, Oklahoma that a young Black man had insulted a white woman in a downtown elevator.
According to the rules of American society, the accused man faced an immediate death sentence. Since the turn of the century, many hundreds of Black men in the U.S. had been brutally lynched and mutilated by vigilante gangs–without trial or investigation–often for accusations of “affronting white womanhood.”

The United States portrays itself as the offended champion of goodness and freedom. Peel back the lies — look at the reality. The only thing unusual about the photos of Abu Ghraib prison is that there were photos that got out. So soak in the precious glimpse of a global reality — repeated at Guantanamo, Bagram, and a hundred other centers (including the rendition to Syria and Libya thanks to the CIA)>

How the road from 9/11 led to my door

For ten years, the tragic events of September 11, 2001, have been used as a pretext for endless war — tens of thousands dead in Afghanistan; more than a million killed in Iraq; and a campaign of repression at home, carried out against thousands of Arabs, Muslims, and now, even the peace movement. The road from 9/11 led the FBI to my door, with an early morning raid on my home, and a secret grand jury investigating two dozen peace activists on terrorism charges.
When the Bush Administration used the events of September 11 to justify war against Afghanistan, I joined thousands to march against that war. How many of us knew it would become the longest war in US history?   Costing tens of thousands of lives, and nearly 500 billion dollars, this war has lost the support of the majority of Americans. Even so, the Obama Administration continues Bush’s war, making it his own. Under his command, the war has expanded into Pakistan, and the “war on terror” is still offered as justification for aggressive military policies across the globe.

The Aftermath of Fukushima in Koodankulam

http://sanhati.com/articles/4118/

September 10, 2011
by S. P. Udayakumar
The three-in-one disaster at Fukushima has stirred human consciousness all over the world. On the one hand, it has prompted Germany’s decision of phasing out nuclear energy by the year 2022, Italians’ overwhelming vote against nuclear power in a national referendum, and some 20,000 Swiss citizens’ rallying against nuclear power and so forth. Even the Chinese government put all its nuclear activities on hold and decided to do stocktaking before proceeding any further.
On the other hand, Fukushima has evoked a totally different and horrendous response from other quarters. India is a case in point. The chief of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) tried to explain away Fukushima accidents as “chemical explosions” and the chief of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) claimed that the Indian nuclear power plants were all away from earthquake-prone zones. The Prime Minister of India tried to reassure the nation that the Indian nuclear power plants were all safe. He did not elaborate on what made him feel so confident or what steps he had taken to evaluate the safety standards and procedures at the Indian nuclear power plants.

The Issue is the Army - Integration and the Nepalese Army comments from Comrade Biplap

"They want to divide the PLA into two factions where most people are sent home, and a small number are integrated. We will not accept this plan.

We think the line that Prachanda has taken is right-revisionism. It will liquidate our forces and army. It will end the revolution. We do not accept it.

To integrate the PLA, two things must be solidified:

1.The majority of the PLA has to be integrated.

2.The PLA must lead its units, and the PLA must take leadership positions in the army.

We want free units and collective integration. They are denying these things, and the struggle is over these points".

Ten years ago, we were all rushing to understand and inform — to help many people throw their weight against the intense rush toward imperialist verdicts, war and punishment.
When two planes hit the World Trade Center and a third hit the Pentagon, the U.S. government and media unleashed a flood of manufactured news — funneling the broad shock and anger of people toward support for several impending wars. Little was known among people about Osama Bin Laden or the escalating conflict between the U.S. and Jihadist forces.
In those days, revolutionary forces scrambled to understand and then explain what was known. Here is an article I wrote in those first days (published in mid-September 2001 in the pages of the Revolutionary Worker where I then worked).

Afghanistan Intrigue:

The CIA and Osama bin Laden

by Mike Ely
Young boys digging bomb shelters in the dusty hills of Afghanistan. Tens of thousands of Afghani refugees trekking to the border of Pakistan, desperate to leave before U.S. bombs fall on their country. What will happen to the people of Afghanistan who have lived in war and poverty for so long? It is a terrible thing, that the U.S. power structure is moving its forces halfway around the world–that the U.S. is putting the people of Afghanistan, once again, in the crosshairs of war.

Requiem of a ‘Dream’
by Abhijnan Sarkar
That day was probably 28th November, 2006; the pre-scheduled meeting by Krishi Jami Rakhsa Committee against forceful land acquisition in Singur, Hoogly was forced to be cancelled. The meeting was cancelled because the state administration declared Sec. 144 in the locality of Singur. Though the organisers had received prior permission, the CPI(M) led government, in a brutal manner, tried to gag the voice of unwilling farmers, and compelled the organisers to call off the program. Smt. Mamata Banerjee was one of the main speakers there; she shouted herself hoarse against the undemocratic and deceitful declaration of Sec. 144 in Singur on that particular evening; other democratic organisations also slammed the government. Singur was the beginning of end of the ‘Left’ regime and their sham democracy.

Baburam Bhattarai – Chosen Gravedigger of the Nepal Revolution

source:http://revcom.us/a/245/baburam_bhattarai-en.html

On August 28, 2011 Baburam Bhattarai, one of the main leaders of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), was elected Prime Minister of Nepal. His first major act was to symbolically hand over the keys to the weapons of the Maoist-led People's Liberation Army which had waged a 10-year-long liberation war, to a governmental supervisory committee including representatives of the political parties and classes which had been the bitter and bloody opponents of the People's War. UCPNM Chairman Prachanda also participated, in what many in Nepal and elsewhere are seeing as an abject ceremony of capitulation before the reactionary forces and an utter betrayal of the interests of the people in Nepal and around the world.

Arundhati Roy on the Jan Lokpal bill: “What Are You Doing This For?”

Posted by hetty7 on September 9, 2011

Recently, a popular anti-corruption movement has arisen in India around activist Anna Hazare’s support of the Jan Lokpal bill. This is a piece of legislation that proposes to institutionalize anti-corruption measures, protect whistleblowers and address the grievance of citizens. Arundhati Roy, who is one of India’s most consistently fierce and principled voices for justice, is opposed to the bill in its current form, and is skeptical about some of the dynamics of the movement it has generated. According to Roy, the Jan Lokpal legislation has support from dubious entities like the Ford Foundation and the World Bank, and could be used to bolster corporate interests in India. She also discusses the nature of corruption in India, and the difference between mass movements led by the people and those infiltrated by NGOs. This interview is from Sanhati, August 30,  2011.

India -  Jan Lokpal Bill is very regressive: Arundhati Roy

” For protest movements of the powerful, protest movements where the media is on your side, protest movements where the government is scared of you, protest movements where the police disarm themselves, how many movements are there going to be like that? I don’t know. While you’re talking about this, the army is getting ready to move into Central India to fight the poorest people in this country, and I can tell you they are not disarmed. So I don’t know what lessons you can draw from a protest movement that has privileges that no other protest movement I’ve ever known has had.”
In an exclusive interview, writer Arundhati Roy said there are serious concerns about the Jan Lokpal Bill, corporate funding, NGO’s and even the role of the media.
Sagarika Ghose: Hello and welcome to the CNN-IBN special. The Anna Hazare anti-corruption movement has thrown up multiple voices. Many have been supportive of the movement, but there have been some who have been skeptical and raised doubts about the movement as well. One of these skeptical voices is writer Arundhati Roy who now joins us. Thanks very much indeed for joining us. In your article in “The Hindu” published on August 21, entitled  ‘I’d rather not be Anna’, you’ve raised many doubts about the Anna Hazare campaign. Now that the movement is over and the crowds have come and we’ve seen the massive size of those crowds, do you continue to be skeptical? And if so, why?
Arundhati Roy: Well, it’s interesting that everybody seems to have gone away happy and everybody is claiming a massive victory. I’m kind of happy too, relieved I would say, mostly because I’m extremely glad that the Jan Lokpal Bill didn’t go through Parliament in its current form. Yes, I continue to be sceptical for a whole number of reasons. Primary among them is the legislation itself, which I think is a pretty dangerous piece of work. So what you had was this very general mobilization about corruption, using people’s anger, very real and valid anger against the system to push through this very specific legislation or to attempt to push through this very specific piece of legislation which is very, very regressive according to me. But my skepticism ranges through a whole host of issues which has to do with history, politics, culture, symbolism, all of it made me extremely uncomfortable. I also thought that it had the potential to turn from something inclusive  of what was being marketed and touted and being inclusive to something very divisive and dangerous. So I’m quite happy that it’s over for now.

Interview with Biplap ( Netra Biram Chanda) by Eric Ribellarsi

Democracy and Class Struggles Publishes this interview even though it was before Bhattarai was made Prime Minister because it exposes the Bhattarai line. His Interview with the Hindu further down this page exposes Bhattarai his own words.
It first appeared on Winter Has Its End (WHIE).

WHIE: Very sharp differences have emerged in your party over army integration. Could you explain those to us?

BIPLAB: We have a two-line struggle going on in our party over the integration of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). This struggle has mainly been targeted at Baburam Bhattarai, but at the moment it has become focused on Prachanda. Prachanda is claiming that we can go forward by accepting the integration proposals of the reactionary forces in Nepal.

Forests of Pirtand in Giridih district have new best friends in the form of CPI(Maoist) women’s wing, Nari Mukti Sangh.
Since one week, around 70 women of the rebel outfit are taking out hour-long roadshows in the afternoon across the block, exhorting people not to cut trees. If they do, they better pay up a fine of Rs 1,000 or face some unspecified punishment, which is likely to involve beatings. It is green activism that takes itself seriously.
“Jungle bachana hi hoga varna aane wale vinaash ke liye hum khud hi zimmewar honge (we have to save forests at any cost now, otherwise we will be responsible for natural calamities),” thundered Neela Devi, one of the leaders of the outfit.

Anxiety and Destruction : Analysis of the English Riots from Shayo Rouge

Democracy and Class Struugle is pleased to publish this analysis of a young Maoist Comrade of the Recent Riots in England. Our Comrades deeper thought about the Riots contrasts sharply with the bourgeois commentators shallowness on the recent Uprising in England.

Every subject stands at the crossing between a lack of being and a destruction, a repetition and an interruption, a placement and an excess.” – Badiou'

I wrote before that a full revolution requires both destructive and creative force on behalf of the masses (rage and love, negative and positive consciousness). Since then, the people of London and several other English cities have forced open a new chapter in English history with an unprecedented explosion of rebellion.

I characterised the event in Egypt as being essentially destructive and composed of negative consciousness. Obviously, the same can be said of the recent uprising here. But, also obviously, there is a big difference between the two. In Egypt, the destruction was concentrated (both geographically, in Tahrir Square, and ideologically, with a clear political demand), whereas here it was dispersed and (while entirely political in essence, despite what the racist and youthphobic propaganda of the BBC etc would have you believe) had no clear demand, so hasn’t resulted in any concrete progress.

So what exactly is the reason for this difference between Tahrir and Tottenham ??

The Neoliberal Revolution

September 7, 2011
by Anand Teltumbde
Expectedly, the high pitched media supported Anna anshan at Ramlila ground has come to an end with the Parliament passing a unanimous resolution as dictated by the team Anna. The three conditions that the lower bureaucracy should be within the Lokpal’s ambit, Lokayuktas in states should be brought in through a central legislation like Lokpal’s and a citizen’s charter detailing the responsibilities of government functionaries and the penalty for the non-fulfilment should be instituted, were favourably discussed by the Parliament but the government initially avoided passing the resolution, retracting its commitment to the Team Anna and thus adding one more point to its score of foolishness. Soon thereafter, it retracts again and manages a unanimous resolution in the Parliament, which would satisfy Anna Hazare to give up his fast on the 12th day. The media screamed “Anna wins full victory” while Hazare himself cautions the ecstatic crowds that it was just a half. He announced that he has suspended his fast; his agitation would continue until the Lokpal bill was passed.

When Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh referred to Maoists as being the “single largest threat to the nation”, did he mean this child, whose fingers were brutally chopped off while his family was massacred?
Now, even before this 'Maoist' could be sent in for a narco-analysis, let's understand where he comes from.

Age: Two years old

A leaflet from Nari Ijjat Bachao Committee. Original Bengali version at http://sanhati.com/articles/4100/
Dear friends,
It has been 100 days since the current Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee entered Writers. She has claimed that the first 100 days have been days of unqualified success. The media has duly seconded that opinion. Her ministers and cadres are daydreaming about the incipient creation of a New Bengal.
The residents of the Jungal Mahal are not thinking along these lines. But a small fraction of them joined Mamata’s party, and in their quest to exert influence in the area, have started terror on a scale larger than that perpetrated by the CPIM.

Students’ Solidarity With Maruti Workers
A report by AISA. September 6, 2011
On 3 September, a team of some 70 students from Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia formed a solidarity team to visit the Maruti workers who are on dharna against an llegal lockout at the Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant. The visit had been organised by the All India Students’ Association (AISA).
When the busload of students reached the site of the strike, the 2000 workers at the dharna site leapt up to greet them, waving scores of red flags and shouting slogans.

NAPM Statement on the proposed Land Acquisition Bill

September 6, 2011
New Land Bill in Hurry will Create More Land Conflicts in the Country
More Time Required for A Legislation Dealing with Historical Injustices

New Delhi, September 5 : NAPM along with many other movements from across the country under the banner of Sangharsh met Honourable Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh on August 5th and 7th and on both occasions reiterated its demand that Ministry must hold regional and national consultations before the Bill is introduced in the Parliament. Later many organisations including NAPM wrote to him seeking an extension of the deadline from August 31st. However, Mr. Ramesh seems to be a man in hurry. Within four days of the deadline, for receiving the comments from general public he presents the revised draft to the Cabinet for its consideration and without much debate Cabinet recommends it for introduction to the parliament. It is extremely unfortunate that a key legislation is being pushed in such a hurry and Cabinet further dilutes some of the positive developments in the earlier draft. It is ironic that when the mood in country is against the land acquisition then the Cabinet has brought in the provision that if a private company is acquiring land over 100 acres for a public purpose, all the land will be acquired by the government.

The Juggernaut of Empire and the Need for a Whole New World...

Revolution #245, September 11, 2011

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people died when jets flew into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
The immensity and horror of the attacks shocked people. Never had such a thing happened on U.S. soil. Some reacted with rage, with blind patriotic fury. Mobs formed to call for revenge; people who “looked foreign” were not only spat upon and often beaten, but in some cases actually killed for the offense of “looking different.” A network TV host deviated from the message and literally got told by the president’s spokesman in a press conference to “watch what you say.” He lost his show. Massive government roundups of over 1,000 immigrants occurred.

10 BIG LIES in the U.S. “War on Terror”

1  “Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction.”
—Vice President Dick Cheney,
August 2002
No “weapons of mass destruction” were ever found in Iraq. An October 2004 CIA report concluded, “Iraq unilaterally destroyed its undeclared chemical weapons stockpile in 1991” and found “no credible indications that Baghdad resumed production.” An unnamed CIA official later said, “Bush didn’t give a fuck about the intelligence. He had his mind made up [to go to war].”

Update from POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti, September 4

Our villagers are continuing the protest against forceful land acquisition process for settling up POSCO steel plant at the Govindpur Village boarder. In the adjacent village Nuagaon also, around 100 villagers are sitting on daily basis in protest against the forceful land acquisition process. Meanwhile the government is carrying out tree cutting activities at Nuagoan village. The government is targeting to cut over 6,00,000 trees which include about three lakh casuarina and many horticultural plants.

The Anna Hazare Movement and the Second Generation Reform

September 4, 2011
by Vishnu Sharma
The Anna Hazare’s Anti-Corruption Movement has become an important point of discussion among the general public as well as intellectuals. The first reaction, although mistaken, was that is a battle between the democracy and the oligarchy comprising feudal elites of Indian society who have taken over the parliament, which represented democracy. The second reaction was from the left perspective which was often confusing. Initially it refused to accept it as a movement but later, when it grew ‘big’ -thanks to the corporate media, it gave it a ‘conditional’ support fearing isolation from the ‘masses’. The confusion was due to the demands put forth by movement and the support of the corporate it was getting. Both anti-thesis to each other in form and in essence. The left could not judge what the Team Anna was fighting for and hence was unable to educate the masses. The left also didn’t see that through the Anna Movement the Indian state is initiating the second generation reform. In this phase the major issue is the reform in the bureaucracy. During the first generation reform Ram Mandir hysteria was created this time corruption became the logic of reform.

The Great Deception in Nepal by Roshan Kissoon.

Democracy and Class Struggle publishes this contribution from Roshan Kissoon to clarify the situation in Nepal. We welcome debate and contributions to clarify the current situation in Nepal to rectify the Maoist Party and Comrade Kissoon's contribution is an informed part of that debate.

However its publication does not mean that Comrade Kissoons views are the same has Democracy and Class Struggle.

Democracy and Class Struggle still see potential for the rectification of the Maoist Party in Nepal unlike this article of Roshan Kissoon.

We see Prachanda and Bhattarai ignoring the decisions of the party, putting themselves above the Maoist Party. The Nepalese Maoist Party must assert its authority over its "leaders" if the Nepalese Revolution is going to have a chance of success..

A strange event has taken place in Nepal, in which the Maoists have assumed the leadership of the new government with a neo-liberal political and economic program. Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, leader of the rightist trend, is now Prime Minister. It is also strange that the Peoples Liberation Army has now handed over its weapons and will be disbanded, generously aided by various international donor agencies and the usual friends of peace. But most strange is the change in the Maoist leadership of Chairman Prachanda and Dr. Baburam Bhattarai since they entered the peace process.

A Storm is Coming

Biplab: "Even if we cannot go together, nothing will stop the coming revolution"

The following interview with Biplab, a leading member of the Maoist party, was conducted the week before Baburam Bhattarai's election. During that period, there was a tactical alliance between the Bhattarai and Kiran factions of the party aimed at reducing the power of Prachanda in the party (while the reasons for wanting to do that varied greatly). That tactical alliance has not existed since Bhattarai's moves to disarm and dissolve the People's Liberation Army. While some things have changed since the time of writing, this interview gives an important view of the struggle over the future of Nepal's revolution within the Maoist party.

Prachanda is claiming that we can go forward by accepting the integration proposals of the reactionary forces in Nepal.
They are ready to dissolve, not integrate, the People’s Liberation Army which fought for 12 years, into the Nepal Army.
It is amazing that the Nepal Army has put forward proposal about integration. Their proposal gives them leadership and disintegrates the People’s Liberation Army under it. The PLA is treated not as soldiers of Nepal. It suggests that the PLA step aside into local bureaus, and become unarmed forest guards. Prachanda is accepting their proposal.
Right now, the PLA’s arms are confined to containers. The Nepali Congress and UML parties [corrupt pro-Indian and status quo parties] are demanding that these arms be destroyed, and Prachanda is sympathizing with them.
They want to divide the PLA into two factions where most people are sent home, and a small number are integrated. We will not accept this plan.
We think the line that Prachanda has taken is right-revisionism. It will liquidate our forces and army. It will end the revolution. We do not accept it.
To integrate the PLA, two things must be solidified:
  1. The majority of the PLA has to be integrated.
  2. The PLA must lead its units, and the PLA must take leadership positions in the army.
We want free units and collective integration. They are denying these things, and the struggle is over these points.

Last night, Kathmandu and cities throughout the entire country were rocked by militant torch demonstrations. We watched as literally thousands and thousands of demonstrators challenged the decision of Nepal’s Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to disarm the People’s Liberation Army and the complicity of the Maoist party’s chairman, Prachanda, in this act.

The crowd was mostly young, and the feel was one of both anger and excitement. One young Maoist said to me “finally, we are standing up.” People were not at all demoralized. They were (and are) ready to fight to save their revolution.
Following these demonstrations, Biplab, a leader of the Maoist party who has opposed the disarming and argued for revolution, has launched a mass campaign throughout the country to build opposition for to the moves of Prachanda and Bhattarai within the Maoist party. We have learned that this campaign will include mass rallies and educational forums, the mass production of polemical pamphlets, and a new graffiti campaign.

News Flashes from Nepal’s Power Showdown

[1] Dahal sends PLA commanders to cantonments

KATHMANDU, Sept 3: Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday sent all the seven divisional commanders to their cantonments, cutting short their stay in Kathmandu in view of the likely untoward incidents in cantonments in the wake of the row in the party over the key handover issue. The divisional commanders had arrived in the capital for a general staff meeting of the Maoist PLA on Thursday and were supposed to attend a two-day discussion on technical aspects of integration. But the meetings have been cancelled as they had to return to their respective cantonments on Friday.

Nepali Maoists Kiran & Badal oppose turning over Weapons Keys

Joint Press Statement by Comrade Kiran and Comrade Badal

“We express our gratitude to the patriotic and revolutionary people of Nepal who demonstrated their solidarity with us by symbolically protesting nationwide in the form of transport halt and torch processions. We also appeal to the distinguished people to carry this act of solidarity to a newer height.”
September 3rd, 2011
Let us oppose the decision of handing over the keys!
Let us implement the decision of dignified army integration!
The abrupt step taken at 5 pm on September 1 to hand over the keys of containers of the weapons in the cantonments to the special committee under the Council of Ministers is against the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, Interim Constitution and the decisions of the party’s central committee and standing committee. We, therefore, strongly demand that the concerned sectors immediately abrogate this decision.

Who will wash the tribal blood stains on Tata Steel’s image?

September 2, 2011
by Surya Shankar Dash (Source : forestrights listserv)
A little more than a year ago Nira Radia was heard telling Vir Sanghvi about her fight with the ‘Maoists’ for the Tatas in Kalinga Nagar. Around the same time Madhyantara Vol 4 (a video magazine by the Samadrusti Tv Collective) was released and featured extensive footage of hundreds of policemen pillaging villages in Kalinga Nagar. A few defenceless villagers threw stones at a sea of marauding para-military forces but at the end their foodstocks were on fire, their utensils were systematically broken and their water sources were contaminated with kerosene ( http://youtu.be/iQNXxLaQt-o ). This is part of a long drawn battle between the Adivasi inhabitants of Kalinga Nagar and Tata Steel, with the entire administrative and police machinery at Tata’s disposal.

Lessons of Indonesia 1965: Revolution requires a peoples army

Posted by kasama on September 2, 2011
In the early 1960s, Indonesia had the third largest communist party in the world. This PKI had deep roots among millions of people, and was seeking ways to acquire the political power to enact fundamental changes. It was also bureaucratized, sluggish, over-confident, and rooted in parliamentary routine within the capital.
But this party chose not to develop an actual peoples army — and believed they could transform the existing state, an anti-colonial government headed by Sukarno that had emerged out of the guerrilla days of World War 2.
That is not how things worked out. With secret CIA backing, the Indonesian military staged a surprise attack in 1965 and a historic bloodbath over many months , murdering and torturing hundreds of thousands, included especially the most conscious and dedicated servants of the people.
The victorious army established a fascist dictatorship (under General Suharto) that survived for decades (with U.S. and other foreign  backing) as a major bureaucrat capitalist regime. And the communist movement in Indonesia was never able to bounce back — rebuild its ranks and influence, or regain the peoples trust. Now, unfortunately, the antigovernment sentiments of Indonesia are often attracted to Islamist forces — who have no visions of progressive radical change.
The history of Indonesia in 1966, like the history of Chile from 1973, is a terrible lesson paid for in blood. Revolutionaries all over the world need to understand these events.
One place to start is the following self-criticism written by the Indonesian communist party. They  appeared in a famous pamphlet published in revolutionary China shortly after the bloodbath (1968): “People of Indonesia, Unite and Fight to Overthrow the Fascist Regime.”
These documents are a product of their times — with all the gaps and flaws that go with that. We suggest a critical evaluation.
We want point out that there have been deep, painful experiences with unarmed attempts at revolution in Indonesia and Chile — where the people rose up to make radical change, but the modern weapons of society remained the exclusive property of the existing army. We should all absorb those lessons and apply them creatively.

Statement by the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Indonesian Communist Party

(Excerpts)

August 17, 1966

A statement issued by the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Indonesia (P.K.I.) on August 17, 1966, appeared in the first issue of Indonesian Tribune published in November 1966. It was entitled “Take the Road of Revolution to Realize the Tasks Which Should Have Been Accomplished by the 1945 August Revolution”.

The statement points out that the Indonesian people observe the 21st anniversary of the outbreak of the 1945 August Revolution in a situation when the counter-revolutionaries headed by the Right-wing army generals Suharto and Nasution rule over the country. During this period of almost one year, modern Indonesian history has never witnessed such a rampant counter-revolutionary terror, whose barbarism is comparable only to that of Hitlerite Nazism, as has been unleashed by the forces headed by the reactionary generals in the army. Nevertheless, no matter how vicious and barbarous the counter-revolutionaries have run amok, they will never succeed in suppressing the revolutionary elan of the working class, the peasantry and other driving forces of the revolution.

Taking a revolution’s weapons: Push comes to shove in Nepal

UPDATE FROM NEPAL:

We have just learned that the Prachanda and Bhattarai factions of the Maoist party in Nepal have announced that they will not step back from their moves to disarm the Peoples  Liberation Army. Not only will they order then hanging over of keys to weapons storage containers, but they will also begin moving the containers themselves out of three of the cantonments. (Cantonment is the name for the treaty-supervised bases where the PLA forces are concentrated.)

Kiran, Dev Gurung, and Biplab boycotted the meeting.

Today, the Kiran faction of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has launched a major protest program against the disarming of the People’s Liberation Army being led by Nepal’s new Prime Minister, Baburam Bhattarai. The Maoist rebels are demanding the immediate reversal of the decision to disarm People’s Liberation Army, a process which has already begun.
So far, this program has included:
  1. A nation-wide one hour blockade of major roads and intersection throughout the country. We have heard this took place at roughly 50 locations in Kathmandu, including Kalanki, the main road used for entrance into Kathmandu.
  2. A boycott of major party meetings, including today’s Standing Committee meeting.
  3. Torchlight marches throughout Kathmandu and in other cities throughout the entire country, beginning tonight at 6:00 PM.
We will keep you posted as we learn more.

IT IS RIGHT TO REBEL! Without a people’s army, the people have nothing.

Statement by Kiran on Disarming of the People's Liberation Army

Thanks to Bikkil Sthapit for providing this translation of a statement by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist)'s vice chairman, Kiran.
Kathmandu: September 1, 2011
Our party has always remained firm about the commitments to drafting a new constitution and army integration in regards to the Comprehensive Peace Accord. We’ve already envisioned that both tasks must be completed simultaneously. Without any doubt, Army integration is one of the vital parts of peace process. Up to today, everyone has known the fact that the army integration process requires a mutual understanding.
The respectful integration of PLA has been accepted many times in various levels of party meetings. The modalities of the Army integration process and re-establishment package were topics yet to be decided before starting the re-categorization of the army. In contrast to these pacts and contrary to the Party Central Committee and Standing Committee deal, the meeting of ‘Army Integration Special Committee’ which met yesterday made a surprising and suicidal decision of handing over the container and keys of the weapons by 7:00PM today. This decision will lead to disarming and dissolving of People’s Liberation Army. We condemn this decision and humbly request the discarding of this decision of surrender immediately.

RCP of Canada faces repression: 3 Communists arrested in Montreal

RCP contingent from G20 Summit in Toronto, June 2010
This first appeared on the site of Revolutionary Initiative (Canada) in July.
Note: the Revolutionary Communist Party discussed in this piece is the RCP of Canada (which has no connection with the RCP,USA, despite their similar names).
The Revolutionary initiative wrote as their introduction:
“The following is a statement from the RCP Information Bureau concerning the arrest of four activists in Montreal, including a supporter of the RCP Patrice Legendre. It goes without saying that R.I. condemns the arrests and unequivocally supports the comrades and supporters of RCP, an organization with which we have fraternal relations and are in a unity struggle with.  Let’s build a revolutionary movement to defend against and repel these attacks at all levels!”

Nearly 30 officers were involved in the operation, which occurred early in the day.

Nepal: A Plan of National Surrender

Thursday, September 1, 2011

Source : The Next Front
September 1st, 2011

Prachanda and Baburam have decided to handover of arms container’s key to Army Integration Special Committee (AISC). After all they have come out in their real color. Now they have fulfilled their mission of political surrender. The reactionary forces inside the country and abroad have appreciated this decision and the revolutionaries forces are extremely worried.
It is a suicidal decision for the Maoist Party. In fact, it is the decision of national surrender and betraying the revolution. Disarming the People’s Libration Army means liquidation of the PLA.

This evening, issuing a press statement, Comrade Mohan Baidhya ‘Kiran’ vice chairman of UCPN (Maoist) has denounced the handover of arms containers’ keys to the Army Integration Special Committee (AISC). In his press statement he has warned that the decision would be suicidal for the Maoist party itself. As he states : “This move has come against the decision of (the party’s) central committee and standing committee. The decision made in a hurry is meant to disarm and dissolve PLA.”

Nepal: Resistance to handing over the people’s weapons

Posted by Mike E on September 1, 2011
Eric Ribellarsi writes from Nepal that two significant statements appeared today in the Nepali press. (For background on this, see the Kasama posting Ominous Development.)
Kiran:
“The special committee’s decision to hand over weapons key on Thursday by 5 pm is an attempt to disarm and dissolve People’s Liberation Army. The decision has opposed standing and central committee decisions of the party which had decided to hand over the keys after the modality and rehabilitation packages have been finalized.”
Gaurav:
“The keys to arms containers won’t be handed over today… There are differing opinions within the party; any single person can not make the decision. The party has not made any decision in this regard.”
It is also being claimed that the new Prime Minister Bhattarai is acting directly against a decision of the Party this week.
More to come.

I lifted my eyes as I wiped a streak of sweat from my face.  The place was packed.  About a thousand people crammed into a theater meant to hold nine hundred.  The center aisle was filled with people perched on impromptu seats all the way to the back row.  Some stood peering through the entryway.  Up top, the balcony was filled to the brim as well.  And… it was hot.

Killing, Denial and Manipulation

August 30, 2011
By Gladson Dungdung
30 year-old Mangri Honhanga along with her 4 month-old son Dula Honhanga and other family-members had desperately come to Ranchi last week, after travelling for more than 6 hours right from Saranda forest in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand with the hope of getting justice. Both the mother and child have been suffering from illness – Dula is grade-3 malnourished patient and Mangri has been suffering from anaemia; but they have no choice other than facing all kinds of sufferings. The life was little better for them before 2 bullets of COBRA Jawans ended the life of 38 year-old Mangal Honhanga the father of Dula and Mangri’s husband. Therefore, they had come to share their pains, sufferings and agony with the Chief Minister, the top cops and of course, with the media. Mangri Honhanga only knows that her husband was picked-up by the police from her house, taken to the forest and finally the dead body was handed over to her.

Gobindpura, Punjab: Fact-finding Report on Land Acquisition by Poena Power Company

August 30, 2011
This report has been prepared by the Democratic Front Against Operation Green Hunt Punjab
Background
Gobindpura – a small village of Mansa district in Punjab is in shackles. All the fundamental rights of its people – Right to speak and expression, Right to organize & struggle, Right to free movement & carry put their profession and calling, have been crippled under the jackboots of the police. Their lands and houses have been expropriated and handed over to Poena Power Company after putting up barbed wire fencing around these. When they protest against this, the police pounce upon them. Women and little girls are assaulted, beaten up and huddled in police stations. There are police barricades all around the village, so that these people can not show their injuries to outside world, could not express their grief of being rendered landless and houseless, so that none from other villages comes to support them, to raise his voice in their favor, to console them. When farmers, khet-mazdoors and justice loving people from different parts of Punjab move in their support, they are attacked with lathis and guns, the fields and roads are drenched in blood.

The Thing About Slutwalks... and a World Without Rape

Posted Thursday, August 25, 2011
I'll admit, when I first heard about Slutwalks I cringed. I hate the word slut. It is too hateful. Too bound up with shaming women for their sexuality. Too linked to the deep trauma experienced by millions of women and young girls every single day. Too much part of the cultural DNA that says, "She deserved it," or, "She was asking for it," or, "She's dirty," or, "You little cunt whore."
To get even more specific, for me the word "slut" was too indelibly linked to a girl named Kelly.  She transferred into my junior high school in the middle of the year. She was ridiculed and outcast in that kind of mean-girls way that reduces a young woman to an invisible, despised zero for absolutely no reason except to make others feel like maybe they exist. And really, what could be more lonely and humiliating for a junior high girl than standing in front of a whole cafeteria filled with uproarious laughter carrying your lunch tray from table to table being told that every empty chair is being saved for somebody, anybody, who isn't you?

The New Situation and the Great Challenges

Note: The following are excerpts from a tape-recorded talk by Bob Avakian, the Chairman of the RCP,USA, in the aftermath of September 11 and in the context of the war launched by the U.S. government (and its "coalition"), focused initially against Afghanistan. The text has been edited for publication and subheadings have been added. We urge our readers to study this sweeping talk, which was not only quite prescient, but continues to be very relevant in today's world.

WHAT IS AT STAKE

I want to speak first of all to the strategic dimension involved in the current and developing situation since September 11. I think we have to look at it in terms of a very wide range of possibilities connected with what the imperialists are up to and the whole cauldron of contradictions that are involved. To put it in stark terms, the range of possibilities involves everything from, on the one hand, on the negative side, devastating defeats for the proletariat and the proletarian revolution internationally, of a character that would set us back for decades. It could even lead to devastation organizationally, if not politically, for the international communist movement and its vanguard forces, and at the same time to very great advances and consolidations by the imperialists, the U.S. imperialists in particular.

THE HORRORS THAT COME FROM THIS HORRIBLE SYSTEM

Posted August 30, 2011 at revcom.us
This statement was distributed very widely in the days after September 11. The understanding concentrated in the statement remains very much to the point.
September 11, 2001. USA. Shock. Mountains of steel and concrete falling, crushing. Loss. Lives shattered in a moment. Searching for loved ones buried under mountains of debris.
Horror from the sky.
A brown skinned woman stands at the Red Cross line holding a picture of her missing husband. Her eyes scan the scene as if looking hard will bring him back. A young blue eyed man waits nervously for news of his lover. Hope turns to the realization that partners, friends and colleagues are gone. Snatched away by a conflict that has brutally intruded into daily life from the heavens.

The Fall of the Qaddafi Regime in Libya…and the Hand of the U.S. and NATO

Posted Thursday, August 25, 2011
The 42-year rule of Muammar Qaddafi over the north African country of Libya appears to have come to an end. Anti-Qaddafi fighters poured into the capitol city of Tripoli—Qaddafi’s main stronghold, over the weekend of August 20-21 and by Monday, August 22, had taken over most of the city. (At this writing, the whereabouts of Qaddafi and his sons apparently remain unknown.)
Qaddafi's overthrow and the victory of the "rebel" forces is being presented by the U.S. rulers, their European imperialist allies—including Britain, France, and Italy—and their media mouthpieces as a big victory for the people, a triumph of "democracy" over tyranny, and a vindication of their "humanitarian" military intervention in Libya.

For over twenty years, the impoverished and isolated peoples in the southern Himalayan foothills have risen up to remake themselves and their world. Now, after the sacrifices of a whole generation, the future of their movement and society hangs in the balance:
Will the revolutionary sections of the people be able to carry through the struggle to create the radically new Nepal they have dreamed of? Or will the accomplishments of their struggle so far be consolidated into something that falls short of liberation?
Two roads sharply posed
Different futures confront each other. Those opposing roads have become concentrated in a very stark set of opposing choices:

They are minimising the ideological struggle by Indra Mohan Sigdel "Basanta"

Thanks to the Comrades of The Next Front Nepal for making this available.

A serious ideological struggle is going on in our party now. While saying so, it does not mean that there was no ideological struggle in our party before. It perseveres in a party; sometimes it is extensive and sharp and sometimes not. Moreover, it does not always centre on only one issue; but on different issues depending on time and context. The ideological struggle in our party has now been manifested in two lines, Marxism or reformism, and it has centred on ideological, political and organisational lines. It is very much piercing and serious too.
